Social Networking was the buzz word of 2009 and is set to explode in 2010 - does your business need to be socially networking?

In most cases business DO need a social presence, but this only applies if you put some effort into it!

If you are unsure about how sites such as Facebook & Twitter work then here's a (very) brief lowdown...

Social Networking is all about connecting people in real time - both Facebook and Twitter allow you to see what your friends / contacts are doing at any given time. This is achieved through updates... When your friends update their status (or send a new tweet) then if you are logged into that service you get notified straight away. If you are not logged in then you can catch up when you do log in.
Most Facebook updates and Twitter tweets are mundane stuff from people - "just got back from the hairdressers" and "The bus was late again this morning" type messages are common place, but there is some good stuff going on out there if you have the right friends and follow the right people...

If (for example) you are a Football fan then there are various football Twitter accounts you can follow - this means that any breaking news stories get to you almost instantly. A lot of businesses also run competitions on Facebook and Twitter, which means that you can win some cool stuff!

This brings me onto the point of this post...

If you are going to go into the whole Social Networking scene then you really need a good strategy to entice people to follow you... Examples are:

Competitions
Discount Codes.
Free Products

If you give people a good reason to join you - they will

If you are planning on creating Facebook and Twitter accounts for the sake of it and not keeping them updated with useful business related material then just forget it...
